A Celebration of Life for Dr. Maurice M. “Mickey” Hallum, III, age 81, of Fayetteville, will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday June 25th, 2016 at the Fayetteville First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carol Tate officiating. Dr. Hallum passed away Wednesday June 15, 2016 in Nashville. In accordance with is wishes, Mickey’s body was donated to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for anatomical study.
He was a native of Atlanta, GA, son of the late Maurice M. and Frances R. Simpson Hallum, Jr. Dr. Hallum was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired engineer with the U. S. Army and a member of the Fayetteville First Presbyterian Church, where he also served as an Elder.
Survivors include his wife Patricia “Pat” Wooddall Hallum of Fayetteville, son Bart Hallum of Atlanta, GA, two daughters Karen (Carl) Cain of Marietta, GA, and Janice (Brad Dale) Winters of Decatur, AL, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Mitch and John Hallum.
The family will receive friends Friday evening June 24th, 2016 5-8 P.M. at Higgins Funeral Home.

Mickey indeed was one of a kind! It’s thanks to him we have the program here in Lincoln County for having your taxes done FREE! I met Mickey over 20 years ago right after he started this free service and asked for volunteers to work. He certainly taught me a lot of things and I have enjoyed working with him for the past 20+ years. He will certainly be missed by all of us. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, Pat, your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mickey had a lot of friends and acquaintances that will be sharing in your grief.
Mickey was essentially the one who interviewed me for my job as the first full-time employee of the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station in Huntsville. He was also a primary force who helped revive the Research Institute at The University of Alabama in Huntsville.
I’ve always been thankful for the trust he put in me, especially since I was not a civil servant. It was rewarding to have him provide challenging projects which could demonstrate that UAH could provide meaningful applied research for critical missile development programs in a time-sensitive environment. He had the ability to inspire people to expend that extra effort sometimes needed to get a job done.
I do regret that it’s been too many years since I last visited him and his tree farm. Every time I see the trees which I planted at our place in Tennessee though, I think of Mickey and his trees. He was one of a limited number of people who I’ve ever really admired/respected and was the most influential contributor to my engineering career. Regardless of the project/challenge/situation, it seems that I always felt better after talking with Mickey; he was such a “positive” person. He and Pat both would always leave a smile on my face. Even though it’s been years since I’ve seen Mickey, his passing touches me and I miss him.
Pat, I am so very blessed to have met both you and Mickey when you first moved to Fayetteville. We formed a lasting friendship that I will always cherish. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Mickey – no tribute is far-reaching enough to extol all of his good qualities. He was a rock in the church and to his wife Pat and their family. He was liked by all – really. I don’t think he had an enemy in the world. What a great life he led. Our hearts go out to Pat and the children. Thanks for your fine example, Mickey.
