Obituary

S.J. King, a life long resident of Lincoln County and former mayor of the City of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at his home on May 20, 2016. He was age 89. He was preceded in death by his parents Sidney Johnston and Neice’ Blaylock King, grandson Jonathan King, 4 brothers and 5 sisters. He was the youngest of ten children and the last survivor.

Mr. King was born in the Lincoln Community. He served the office of Alderman from 1966 – 1968. He was chairman of the ABC Commission for the State of Tennessee. He was elected mayor of the City of Fayetteville from 1970 – 1976. Mr. King served on the power board from 1966 – 1969 under the CEO, Floyd Nelson.

Mr. King was instrumental in getting Amana, now know as Goodman Manufacturing, to locate to Fayetteville. It was during his terms as mayor that Copperweld opened in Fayetteville. These two companies have been very generous to the City of Fayetteville and Lincoln County. Mr. King was a true servant to his county and to the City of Fayetteville.

He was an avid businessman and part owner of the Piggly Wiggly in Park City. He genuinely loved people and sharing conversations of years passed. He never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Pickett) King, two daughters, Janice Rollins of Fayetteville, Connie and Larry Hearlston of Flintville, son, Jerry and Emily King of Fayetteville, 2 granddaughters, 5 grandsons, 14 great grandchildren and his precious Yorkie, Annie.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 2 pm at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Don Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Flintville Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 12 until 2 pm at Higgins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas Foundation, 4220 Harding Pike, Nashville, TN 37205 or the Howell Church of Christ, 275 South Fishing Ford Rd., Petersburg, TN 37144.

What can one say when they lose a brother-in-law? I, for one, am gonna miss SJ King. We had a lot of laughs the past few years. Both of us had grown older and mellowed alot and we became closer. He had a special wit about him. He had charm. He was a gentleman. He loved people. Yes, we will miss him but my sister will miss him the most. He was her life for so long. As the years rocked on, and his health made him more dependent on her for everything, she stepped up to the plate and did an amazing job. He never wanted for anything! The love that they shared for each other was so apparent to me and many others. I admired SJ and he had my respect. But most of all, my sister is one to be praised. She unselfishly put him and all his needs before herself. May he have eternal peace! May my sister, Janice P. King, forever find comfort in the memories and the love and respect from her family. God Bless.
