Micky Duran Lawson, a dedicated community servant and business leader, has passed away at the age of 70. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home.
Born on September 18, 1954, in Cookeville, TN, to the late Lloyd Davis Lawson and Amanda Arpha Stout Lawson, Micky was a lifelong resident committed to the betterment of his hometown. A 1972 graduate of Central High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity and worked at Pigg & Parsons Men’s Clothing Store.
Micky served his country in the Army National Guard and had a passion for umpiring football. After returning to Fayetteville, he joined his parents in operating Lawson’s Department Store, later taking ownership in 1985 and running the business with dedication until his passing.
Beyond his role as a businessman, Micky was a pillar of the community, always striving to improve the lives of those around him. His leadership extended to numerous local boards and civic organizations, where he left an enduring impact. He served on the Fayetteville Gas System Board and continued his service after its merger with Fayetteville Public Utilities (FPU), becoming Vice Chairman in 2007. To further his contributions, he completed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Credentialed Cooperative Director program in 2005. His expertise in public utilities led to his appointment to the American Public Gas Association’s Public Gas Policy Council, where he served from 2008 to 2009.
Micky’s commitment to Fayetteville went far beyond public utilities. He was actively involved in the Tennessee Elk River Development Board, the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau, Fayetteville Main Street, Fayetteville Elks Lodge 1792, and the Industrial Development Board. He also played a key role in local governance as a City of Fayetteville Alderman and as Secretary of the Lincoln County Election Commission, ensuring fair and transparent elections for the community.
A man of integrity and unwavering dedication, Micky believed in building a stronger future for Fayetteville. Whether through his business, civic leadership, or volunteer efforts, he worked tirelessly to uplift his hometown. When he wasn’t serving the community, Micky enjoyed hunting, golfing, and fishing—especially spending time on the water. He was also a devoted supporter of UT Football, always cheering on the Vols.
Micky is survived by his daughter, Camille Strong Raby, and her husband, Bryan; grandchildren, Hamilton Bennett Raby and Sterling James Raby; brother, Roy Lawson, and his wife, Shirley; and nieces, Jennifer Culbertson, Jacque Bean, and Mandy Duke. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita Strong Lawson, his parents, and his brother, Donnie Lawson.
Serving as active pallbearers are Britt Dye, Pat Miller, Jeff Albright, Rodney Hill, Andy Wyatt, and Paul Richardson. Micky Lawson’s legacy is one of service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his community.
Memorial donations may be made to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1792, PO Box 837, Fayetteville, TN 37334 (specify for “Fishing Derby”).
Higgins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Micky Duran Lawson.
I loved Mickey Lawson and will miss him. I have such great memories of him…fishing and visiting in the store and discussing the mutual affection that our fathers had for each other. May his memory and strong spirit always give strength to his family and all that knew him.
Mickey was the best there will never be another. He was always so kind to me

Micky gave me my 1st job right after high school at Lawson’s before I started college. I appreciated that he took a chance on me with little to no experience. He knew every customer which really impressed me. He will be missed! Praying for comfort and peace!🙏

What a great guy. Sorry to hear this. Haven’t seen him in years but always thought about him when I drove by the store. Guess I should have stopped more often. I know he will be missed.
I shopped in Lawson’s many times and always seemed he was there every time taking care of business. I remember him from high school and he was very popular. I am sending condolences to his entire family. God bless you all in the days ahead.

Camille,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Micky. I know how much he loved you, Bryan, Hamilton, Sterling, and your precious Mom, Anita. Prayers for you during this time. Love and hugs- my sweetest cousin.
Heaven sure gained a wonderful soul. Lord, how I will miss my friend. We have talked for hours about where we grew up, the people we know, and Dale Hollow Lake, telling stories of mischief and shenanigans from our younger years, always wondering how many times we were in the same places and never knew. I will miss the laughter and memories we shared, but I know he is once again with his wife, Anita, the love of his life. Until we meet again, my friend.
Mickey was a likeable guy, good businessman and managed a top notch men’s and ladies store.
He will be sorely missed.
Sending my deepest sympathy.
