Obituary

Graveside service for Michael Cole Sumners, age 72, of Fayetteville, TN will be held on Saturday, October 23, at 12:30 pm at Cedar Hills Memorial Gardens with Reverend Philip Bunch officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10 am until 12 pm on Saturday at Higgins Funeral Home.

Mike was born September 21, 1949, in Fayetteville, TN to the late Thomas Wilburn and Wilba Elizabeth Maddox Sumners. He was a graduate of Central High School and a veteran of the US Marine Corps. Mike worked in sales at Williams Lumber Company and continued to work for Fayetteville Lumber and Supply before he retired. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Mike was a member of the Fayetteville ARP Church. He passed away on October 17, 2021, at his home.

Mike is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cheryl Lynn Whitmore Sumners; son, Cole Sumners and his wife Donna; grandchildren, Anabeth, Nora Kate, and Whit Sumners; sister, Bonnie (Terry) Reavis; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Wilburn Sumners, Jr.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Michael Cole Sumners.

    Mike was my big brother. I started working at the pool room when I was 14, and Mike and Danny Joe were there to look out for me. I will never forget Mike’s friendship. We went through a lot together. May God Bless your family Cheryl!
