To Wanda and Elizabeth: We are so saddened to know that Joe has left us. He was a presence in our daily lives with all of the advertisements and public announcements that he made on the radio. One could tell by his voice that he was excited about life and especially about the WYTM family of announcers and sponsors. Joe was passionate about his community, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. You have our deepest sympathy. We are so very sorry for your loss. We are holding you up in prayer.

Tribute to my former boss, the late, great Joe Young of WYTM Radio, Fayetteville, TN

    by Dan Davidson
    Former WYTM morning host

I miss this guy. He was one of my former radio bosses at WYTM, Fayetteville, TN. He hired me to be morning host when I was around say, 19 or 20. I thank him for hiring me. It seems like I may have worked, (played) there about 3-4 years, say, about ’74 -’78? He didn’t have to hire me, but he did. For that, I am appreciative.

Positive thoughts & prayers to the family, friends, business associates, & fellow outdoorsmen.. I remember when he hosted an outdoors hunting & fishing show in Huntsville television.

He would call frequently the radio station to check his messages when I was there. At times, he may have been filming one of his shows from the water or the woods. Oftentimes, he would call from Ray Judge’s gun shop in the Winchester, TN area. I remember the ’70 something gold International Scout he drove.

Later, after hosting the Huntsville, AL outdoor shows, he landed a gig at the former Nashville Network co-hosting another hunting & fishing show nationally. He teamed up with the late, great country music singer Bobby Lord in that broadcast. Several former well known country singers were featured & interviewed on those outdoor excursions.

Joe was a multi-tasker & he inspired me.

God bless you, man! Perhaps you may
hosting yet another outdoor show with others you once knew in the clouds? Joe loved life & really lived it! Many times, at lunch, he & staff members would pull out the grill & we had fun grilling out at work. That was the Joe I knew!

    Ms Wanda,
It is with great sadness and personal loss that I write to you.
Joe was a very good friend, whom I enjoyed very much. We couldn’t go 15 seconds without making each other laugh and would spend the balance of our time talking history, flying and travel. He was not only a good friend, but a valuable advisor to Gwen and I.
Joe’s passing will be felt by everyone. Especially within range of WYTM.
A life well lived, an a great asset to our community.
Please know I will miss him daily and it pains me to have to say I am presently in Incheon, South Korea and will be landing my aircraft in Atlanta only after the funeral.
I hate I will not be able to pay my proper respects to you Thursday.
If Gwen and I can be of any service to you ? Please don’t hesitate ask. We loved him like a big brother!
A very sad irony, our last conversation was expressing sincere sympathies for your daughter. Life is short, however very, very special and your family has touched many.

For years I have read a classic Devotional Book, “Daily Light” It is now on line. I pray today’s evening reading will bring comfort and encouragement to you, Wanda, and to each of you family or friend who grieve the loss of Joe’s physical presence with us. May each of us mourn with HOPE Day of Rejoicing Together in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Chirst
Blessings of His Abundance for Every Need.
    EVENING – Sept 23rd
He that overcometh shall inherit all things. Rev. 21:7 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. I Cor. 15:19 Now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly one: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city. Heb. 11:16 An inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. I Pet. 1:4 All things are yours; … the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours. I Cor. 3:21, 22 Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit. I Cor. 2:9, 10
Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. II John 8 Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking to Jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the JOY that was set before Him endured the cross despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God Heb. 12:1-2

Joe was a remarkable human being. I feel honored to have known him. I came to know him and his family when I worked for WYTM in high school and later watching him interact, with humor and great wit, with my father. His goodness and contributions to this community and beyond will never be forgotten. My prayers join with everyone that knew him that Wanda and his family will find some comfort and strength in knowing how much he was loved.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Joe since I started working at WERK radio in 1974. Our paths have continually crossed for 46 years. He visited my mother a few months before she died. She shared some of her fossils with him in his latest hobby. She loved his visit. I have enjoyed our 46 year friendship. I will miss Joe. He was a true character.

    Ms Wanda,
It is with great sadness and personal loss that I write to you.
    Affectionately and very respectfully
    Scott Shelton
