Obituary

It is with regret we announce the passing of Mrs. Geraldine Tripp Howard, age 89, of Fayetteville, TN. Mrs. Howard was born on November 20, 1930 in Petersburg, TN to the late Walter Lawrence and Lora Mae Sawyers Tripp. She passed away on May 17, 2020 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Geraldine was a member of the Washington Street Church of Christ. She was a seamstress and worked for Serbin and Jonathan Logan, before retiring from Lee Jeans in 1995. After retirement Mrs. Howard enjoyed eating breakfast at Hardees before heading out for a day of shopping. Mrs. Howard loved her family and enjoyed spoiling her grandson.

Left to cherish memories of Mrs. Howard are her children, Kathy Lynnette Howard of Fayetteville, Tammy Howard (Philip) Clark of Murfreesboro, TN, and Walter Todd Howard of Fayetteville; grandson, Sawyer McClain Clark; sister, Loretta Stewart of Fayetteville; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, James Walter Howard; brother, Fearel Tripp; and sisters, Helen Sanders, and Estelle Jennings.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there will be no public gathering at this time. A private family service will be held at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Bro. Jim Black officiating. The family invites you to share memories at higginsfh.com.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Mrs. Geraldine Tripp Howard.

When I close my eyes I see all of my aunts as the young women they once were. Aunt Geraldine was always slender, fashionably dressed and so pretty. She was quiet and Uncle Walter was so funny. They are missed.

I have many wonderful memories of this precious lady, my great-aunt Geraldine.

I grew up listening to daddy talk about his wonderful aunts! When we visited Mamaw (Helen) Sanders in Huntsville, we would, more often than not, also head to Fayetteville, TN, to visit “Mama Tripp” and the rest of the family, including Geraldine and Walter.

I can still hear her sweet southern voice and the distinct way she said each of her children’s names. I can especially remember her saying, “Oh Walter!” whenever he would be “carrying on,” as she would say or up to some mischief or another. Beautiful memories.

Aunt Geraldine had a gentle quietness surrounding her that always left me in a bit of awe. She was humble and kind. Her life was one, well lived.

I send love and prayers to Tammy, Lanette, and Todd.
