Frances Jeanette Taylor Hillis, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully at her home in Somerville, AL, on May 1, 2026.
Born in Lincoln County, TN, to the late Edward B. Taylor and Maudie Mae Mearse Taylor, Jeanette was one of twelve children. Growing up on the family farm, she instilled in herself a lifelong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
Jeanette valued education deeply; after earning her associate degree, she enjoyed a long and proud career in Admissions and Records at Motlow State Community College. Her professional life was defined by her diligence, but her personal life was defined by her heart. A natural caregiver, Jeanette selflessly paused her career for several years to provide comfort and care for her mother and brother in their final years.
Jeanette’s spirit was kind and gentle. She found peace in farming and being among animals, but her greatest joy was found in the laughter of children. While she gravitated toward every child she met, none held a candle to her grandson, Dalton. Upon his birth, Jeanette retired to devote her days to him. Together, they shared countless adventures, creating a bond that will remain a cherished legacy.
Jeanette is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ray Hillis; their son Nathan Hillis and wife Evie; and their grandson Dalton Hillis; as well as 7 brothers and sisters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Eddie Mae, Patricia, and Barbara; and her brother, Robert.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 12 PM with visitation from 10 AM until time of the service. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery.
At Higgins Funeral Home, it is our privilege to offer comfort, care, and support to the family of Jeanette Hillis during this time.
