On March 23, 2010, Christine Tipps Kimes died in East Point, GA. Mrs. Kimes was a long time resident of Lincoln County and had moved to be near her son, William Ross (Bill) Kimes, of East Point. She was the daughter of Roy and Anna Lee Tucker Tipps of Mulberry, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ross Kimes who died in 1967. Her parents and her maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Ida Lackey Tucker, were long-time merchants in Mulberry. In May of this year she would have been 98 years old.
She is survived by her son, Bill Kimes and wife Martha, two grandsons, Christopher Kimes and wife Amy of Newman, GA and Kent Kimes and wife Kim of Myrtle Beach, SC. She had seven great-grandchildren of Newman and McDonough, GA, and a great-granddaughter of Myrtle Beach.
At age 12, she became the pianist for the Mulberry United Methodist Church. She accompanied a Mulberry friend, Minnie Hart Pearson, on a weekly radio spot in the early days of WEKR. She was employed by Southern Bell as an operator and was on duty when the tornado struck in the early 50’s. After the death of her husband, she was a desk clerk at the Largen Hotel, a teacher’s aide, and hostess at a local antique house. At the age of 89 she moved to Newman, GA, to an apartment in an assisted living area and then later to Christian City near East Point.
A graveside service will be held at Mulberry Cemetery at 2 PM Friday, March 26.
