Obituary

Funeral service for Mrs. Charlotte Cunningham Whitaker, age 100, of Petersburg will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at Higgins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Old Orchard Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1 pm to 2 pm on Sunday at Higgins.

Mrs. Whitaker was married to the late William Mark Whitaker who passed away in 2011, and she was the daughter of the late Ottie F. and Elizabeth Warden Cunningham. After graduating from Lincoln County High School, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville, TN. Mrs. Whitaker retired from the Tennessee Education Association after a 27-year teaching career, primarily in Marshall County.

Mrs. Whitaker proved lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, and for many years she was an active member of the King’s Mountain Messenger National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Charlotte was skilled in needlework and joined the Embroiders Guild of America (E.G.A.). Her most prized piece, made of silk and metal threads, was displayed in the E.G.A.’s national office in Louisville, KY. Charlotte also prized a few quilts that she pieced by hand and quilted. These quilts were published in “Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution;” a copy of which resides in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

Survivors include her son, Bill Whitaker and his wife Brenda of Pensacola, FL; daughter, Bette Harris and her husband Hoyt of Lafayette, LA; grandson, Hunter Harris; cousins, Mary Alice Brooks, and Charles and Judy Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Charlotte C. Whitaker.
