A celebration of life for Susan Alkenburg Miller, age 63, will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Wetherford officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born in Huntsville, AL, on December 19, 1962, Susan was the daughter of the late Leslie James and Carolyn Lincoln Alkenburg. Susan spent her life in service to others. She dedicated 30 years to the Fayetteville City Schools as a speech pathologist, eventually retiring from Ralph Askins School. To Susan, her colleagues weren’t just coworkers; they were her “Ralph Askins Family.” Susan was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).
Beyond her professional life, Susan was an adventurer at heart who loved to travel, a talented cook, and a fiercely loyal friend. She passed away peacefully at her residence on February 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by her husband, Pat Miller; brothers, John Charles Alkenburg and James Henry Alkenburg; brother-in-law, Doug Miller; her lifelong friend, Terri Towry (Jerry) McCloud; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald Leslie Alkenburg.
Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Susan Alkenburg Miller.

My heart is heavy with the news of Susan’s passing. We worked together, went through graduate school together and spoke on the phone whenever possible. One of the most positive people I have had the pleasure to know!! Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. Condolences to Pat, her brothers and her dear friends.

I am thankful I got to know and love Susan. I will forever think of her with love in my heart.❤️
Susie was so radiant with that beautiful smile every time one was in her presence. She had a wonderful spirit and will be greatly missed, She had our house decorated with yellow ribbons when we got home after the hurricane in St. Maarten and being stuck there and in Puerto Rico for some time. Always doing for others, Always smiling. Always happy. I loved her! To her family and friends–I am so sorry for your loss. Prayers and love will be with you all.

Pat, family and friends, we are so sorry for your loss. Our prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.
Susan was an incredible person, inside and out. She was always kind to others, and, as far as I know, never said a cruel word to anyone. She was, by her own personality, raised to a higher station, from which she never descended. Great Lady.
We hold you all close in our heart and our prayers.
