Obituary

Funeral services for Rachel Oneida “Nita” Moffett Honey, age 100, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, with Pastor Doug Farris officiating. Burial will follow in Kelso Cemetery. Visitation with the family will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Honey was born on July 11, 1925, in Lincoln County, TN, to the late Iliff Thomas Moffett and Nancy Manilla Smith Moffett. A dedicated mother, homemaker, and longtime employee of Amana, she lived her life with energy, kindness, and a servant’s heart. Known for her warm spirit and wonderful cooking, Nita loved caring for others and brought joy to all who knew her.

A faithful member of First Baptist Church, she was actively involved in the Ladies’ Ministry and the YYs. Her faith and fellowship were central to her life; in a recent interview when asked what her secret to reaching the age of 100, she answered “Trust in the Lord.” Her most cherished role was that of “MeMa.” Nothing brought her more joy than time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nita passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at Elk River Health and Nursing Center in Fayetteville.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Dudley Honey and wife Linda of Woodbridge, VA; daughter, Reta Darlene Honey Hiers of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Gregory Scott Hiers, Chad Stephen Hiers, Ryan Dustin Honey, and Randi Devon Honey Morgan; great-grandchildren, Zachary Scott Hiers, Hadley Anne Hiers, Julianne Leighton Demarest, Chloe Belle Morgan, Genevieve Davis Morgan, and Quinn Charlize Morgan; sisters, Peggy Land of Capac, MI, Shirley Pitts of Hartselle, AL, and Linda Woods of North Point, MI; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.D. Honey; four siblings; and three half-siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Love Offering of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 623, Fayetteville, TN 37334.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Rachel Oneida “Nita” Moffett Honey.

Mrs Nita and my Momma were the best of friends. I adored her and have kept in touch over the years, especially at Christmas. She was so precious, and I have saved many of her sweet notes. Rest in peace Mrs. Nita, you have always glorified God to the fullest, now a precious angel.

To Dudley and Rita, your mom was a great Honey. We will all miss her. I know she wanted to make it to 100 yrs old and she did. Now she can be with your dad and God will take care of her. Sincerely, cousin Joel

Miss Honey was our neighbor for a few years and she was our favorite! We enjoyed many good conversations with her on her front porch and we always admired her immaculate yard and flowers. When she learned that my husband loved chocolate pies, she didn’t miss an opportunity to bake one for him. She was truly a special person and we are so thankful that we got the chance to know her.

One of my favorite memories of “Aunt Nita” was when I was about 8 years old and she would pick us up and take us to Sunday School at First Baptist Church, I loved hearing the sound of that old Model A (or T) when she’d arrive. Yes AUNT NITA was the one to introduce me to Christ and I’ve loved her and HIM ever since. I know you’ll have your rewards now in Heaven. Rest in Peace!!

I first met my Nita when my husband and I joined Fayetteville First Baptist Church many years ago. We became fast friends and I considered her my other grandma. I ran errands for her, bought her groceries, went to her doctor visits with her and anything else she felt like doing. She has been one of my greatest joys in life. We have had many discussions about our Lord and Savior where her faith ran true and deep. She will be sorely missed and a giant hole in the lives of so many. Blessings to the family.

My mother, Shirley Pitts, was staying with her sister, Nita, right before I was born while my dad was in the navy. The time came for me to be born, and Dudley carried her suitcase to the car. Nita told that story often. Love my Aunt Nita!
