Obituary

George Pangle Stewart, age 96, of Fayetteville, TN died Tuesday (June 28, 2011) at Lincoln Medical Center. Mr. Stewart was a native of Lincoln County, TN, the son of the late James Alonza Stewart and Mary Lucinda Alexander Stewart. He was a member of the Fayetteville First Baptist Church for 80 years. He has served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School Classes and served as a Deacon for over 50 years. He was recently named Layman of the Year and given the title eacon Emeritus He was a veteran of World War II and advanced from apprentice seaman to a commissioned officer in 23 months. He has been a member of the American Legion for 57 years. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, J.A. Stewart, Jr., and Knox Lulan Stewart. Survivors include daughters Mary Evelyn Barnes of Fayetteville, TN., Wanda Spray of Fayetteville, TN. Grandchildren Mary Angela Barnes of Franklin, TN, Amy Marie Arrick of Franklin, TN, Christopher Stewart Barnes of Fayetteville, TN, Christy Leigh Chaidez of Phoenix, AZ, Jennifer Ann Davis of CA., 9 great grandchildren and his caregiver and dear friend Sherri Tanner. Pangle was employed by Elk Cotton Mills for 47 years where he served as the Chief Financial Officer, Director, and Vice President. He and his brother had a farming operation for many years which included raising beef cattle and walking horses.

Mr. Stewart became the first man to serve as Parent-Teacher Association President in Lincoln County and is still a member of that organization. During his tenure as President the Central PTA won a trophy for the largest increase in membership of any PTA in Tennessee. He was one of the incorporation officers of the Fayetteville-Lincoln County UGF and has served in various positions within this organization. In addition to the UGF, Pangle has been active in numerous other civic organizations with include Boy Scouts, Livestock Association, Horseman’s Association, and the County Fair where served in various capacities.

Mr. Stewart was elected Lincoln County Commissioner for two terms and was Chairman of the Finance Committee for his second term. He joined the Fayetteville Lions Club in July 1952 and maintained over 50 years of perfect attendance. He served in every office in the local club and as District Governor of District 12-I.

Visitation will be Thursday evening June 30, 2011 at Fayetteville First Baptist Church from 5PM until 8PM with funeral services Friday July 1, 2011 at 1PM at Fayetteville First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery beside his wife Evelyn Stewart who passed away in 2006.
