Frances Julia Stephens Smith, 85 died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Windermere Nursing Center in Virginia Beach Virginia. She was a native of Lincoln County and was the daughter of Lena Towry Stephens and Kelvie Clark Stephens. She was a retired civil service employee, having started her career with the Army at Redstone Arsenal and later transferring to the Air Force at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. She continued her career working for the Navy in Orlando, Florida, and retired after many years of working with the Marine Corps in Albany, Georgia. She received the NASA Achievement Award for Landing a Man on the Moon in 1969. She received her bachelor’s degree in business from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah Jane Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Mary Angie Turner of Richmond Virginia; a son-in-law Kenneth Turner of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Juanita Stephens of Bakersfield California; three grandchildren: Erik Hammersberg and his wife, Janell, of Fishersville, Virginia, Richard Hammersberg of Virginia Beach and Rebecca Robertson of Jacksonville, North Carolina and one great grandchild, Julia Robertson of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Smith and by her brother Kenneth Stephens.
Funeral services will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in Fayetteville on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 1PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 11 AM prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
