Funeral services for Doris Jane Currin Taft, 92, of Taft will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 at Higgins Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Blanche Cemetery beside her late husband, Charles E. Taft.
Mrs. Taft died Friday at Lynchburg Nursing Center. She was a native of the Baugh community in Giles County, the daughter of the late A.R. and Roberta Smith Currin. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by son Charles O. Taft and five brothers – Lawrence Currin, Ronald Currin, Barron Currin, Billy Currin and Paul Currin. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include son Larry Taft (wife Dinah) of Taft, daughter-in-law Hazel Taft of Lakeville, Ohio, granddaughter Jane Houin (Craig) of Lakeville, Ohio, and three grandsons – C.E. Taft of Lakeville, Ohio, Marshall Lee Taft (Emily) of Durham, N.C., and Jared A. Taft (Misty) of Matthews, N.C., and six great-grandchildren – Aubree, Garrett and Tristian Houin of Lakeville Ohio, Crete and Gray Taft of Durham, N.C, and Cannon Taft of Matthews, N.C., step-grandsons Jody (Amy) Tichenor and Josh (Missy) Tichenor of Ohio County, KY, step-great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Alicen, Colton and Emily Tichenor all of KY and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Taft was a 1932 graduate of Elkton High School and attended North Alabama College of Commerce. She was employed for 24 years by the Department of Defense, retiring in 1985. She spent the final 16 years of her employment as a program manager on the Patriot Missile Project.
Mrs. Taft was active in community affairs, serving several terms as president of the Blanche Community Improvement Club and also serving as secretary-treasurer of the Blanche Cemetery for 19 years.
She shared a love of horses with her late husband and was a multi-time award-winning exhibitor of weanlings and yearlings at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed cooking, sewing and entertaining in her home as well as working in her flower and vegetable gardens.
Officiating the service will be Mike Waters. Active pallbearers will be Gary Byers, Tommy Cross, Barry Currin, Ron Currin, Thomas Wayne Malone and Jimmy Sanders. Honorary pallbearers are to be John T. Bobo, Thomas Cross, Mike Currin, Shamus Currin, Don Franklin, Tim English, Eric Hulsey and Stan Mathias.
