Obituary

Retired Commander William Loyd Luna, USN, died on February 26, 2026, at Magnolia Trace in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 93.

Commander Luna was an Arnold, Maryland resident from 1972 until 2014, when he moved to Huntsville. Born in Petersburg, Tennessee to Corbet Roscoe Luna and Maudie Smith Luna on December 16, 1932, he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1955. Upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, he was commissioned Ensign on November 10, 1955. During his military career he served in a variety of assignments, including tours of duty in Japan, England, Iceland, and Norway, and was assigned to duties in Memphis, Tennessee, Charleston South Carolina, and Washington D.C. He was a plank owner on the USS Belmont, AGTR-4, a technical research ship, and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service on board during the Dominican Republic crisis in 1965. He served as Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Security Group Activity, Keflavik, Iceland and returned to the Washington D.C. area in 1970. After retiring from the Navy in 1976, he spent the next 20 years at the National Security Agency, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He served for 13 years as Chief, Executive Registry and retired in 1996.

Commander Luna, active in his local community association, was well known throughout Maryland as a beekeeper; he taught beginning courses in beekeeping for the Anne Arundel Beekeepers Association and served as its President for many years. He was an adjunct professor at Anne Arundel Community College where he taught many courses in wine appreciation. He enjoyed gardening, photography, and bridge. Commander Luna traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, and the U.S.

His wife of 70 years, Doris Coryn Franklin Luna, formerly of Petersburg, Tennessee survives him. Also surviving is one brother, Gordon S. (Nancy) Luna of Kathleen, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clyde Luna, and a sister-in-law, Lula May Luna.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Rusty Hills officiating. Burial will follow at Talley Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 11 AM to 1 PM on Monday at Higgins.
