Obituary

Funeral services for Mrs. Alda Carlene Monks Hurt, age 93 of Fayetteville, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 PM at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Hurt passed away Thursday night in Donalson Care Center.

A native of Lincoln County, Mrs. Hurt was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Fannie Moore Monks. She attended school at Belleview, Lincoln County High School and earned her B.S. from M T S U. Mrs. Hurt spent 36 years in public education, teaching in both the Lincoln County School System and the Fayetteville City School System, retiring in 1982 from Ralph Askins Elementary. She was former President, Vice President and Secretary of the Fayetteville Education Association, member of the TEA and NEA, and served on the Fayetteville Lincoln County Library Board She was a very active member of the Fayetteville First Baptist Church for more than 55 years and was involved in teaching sunday school, singing in the choir, and was a member of the YY’s.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years John H. Hurt of Fayetteville, daughter Patricia Davis and husband Johnny of Fayetteville, son John H. Hurt, Jr. and wife Judy of Fayetteville, two grandchildren, Keith Hurt and wife Charla of Fayetteville, Christy Smith and husband Mike of Goodletsville, TN, great-grandchildren Charli Ann Hurt, Josi Hurt and Griffin Smith. Mrs. Hurt was preceded in death by brothers Phillip, Diemer, Russell and J. T. Monks and sister Naomi Hopkins.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday evening 5-8 PM at Higgins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Fayetteville First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Library.
