Obituary

Agnes Marie Campbell Barnes, a devoted servant of God, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 29, 2025, at her residence in the Howell Community, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 22, 1936, in Lincoln County, Tennessee, Agnes was the daughter of the late Paul Morgan Campbell and Dorothy Wiggs Campbell. Throughout her life, Agnes exemplified unwavering faith and a selfless spirit. She was a dedicated wife, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, and great-grandmother, always putting her family first.

Agnes’s love language was undoubtedly acts of service, particularly through her exceptional cooking. She found joy in preparing meals and serving her beloved family, friends, church community, and neighbors. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and comfort, where countless memories were made. Agnes also enjoyed sewing.

A faithful and active member of Howell Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Agnes’s Christian walk was a testament to her profound belief and steadfast devotion.

Agnes is survived by her loving children: Paul L. (Elaine) Barnes, Tim (Dora) Barnes, Chuck (Karen) Barnes, and Lisa Barnes Sisk. Her legacy continues through her twelve grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She also leaves behind a host of extended family members and special friends who will dearly miss her presence.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Wayne Lloyd Barnes; her sister, Gene Adler and her husband, Alan; and her son-in-law, Danny Sisk.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 PM until 8 PM on Friday, August 1, 2025, and 8 AM until the time of service at 10 AM, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Todd Gaskill officiating. Burial will follow in the Unity Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Howell Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 43 Brown Teal Rd, Fayetteville, TN 37334 or the Fabulous Fifties Foundation, P.O. Box 934, Fayetteville, TN 37334.

Agnes’s family rejoices in the assurance of her eternal peace, finding solace in the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Her life was a beautiful reflection of her deep faith and boundless love.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Agnes Marie Campbell Barnes.

I did not know Agnes Marie until July, 2023. I knew her husband, Wayne. a classmate with me at C. H. S., Fayetteville. I live in New Orleans but arranged a Reunion with classmates, 7/7/23, in Fayetteville. Although Agnes was not a classmate, she knew most of Waynes’ class and was a big help to me in contacting class members for the Reunion. Subsequently, I stayed in touch with Agnes. Don Massey called me today to tell me about her passing. He could not have spoken more highly of her than I and everyone else whom I know that remember her do.

My Mama, Carrah Jared, and Agnes were good friends for many years while involved in Christian groups. When my family started attending Howell CP Church, Mama was so happy because she knew Agnes would take care of us. She did that and more. She was not only the matriarch of her family, but of our church. She was a fabulous example for us all. She was Nana to everyone. We will miss her so much!

Agnes was an icon in the Howell community. It was nearly five years ago I had the honor of meeting Agnes through the Howell Community Center. At first I was a bit intimidated because she was, well, she was so Agnes. I was also a bit in awe of this amazing lady. As I got to know her I found that this very strong, very confident lady was also kind, compassionate and caring. I grew to love her, as did so many. I feel so blessed to have seen her yesterday, surrounded (quite literally) by family and friends. She was alert, knew who I was and was glad to see Sheila and me. I feel blessed to have known such a beautiful, amazing lady. As all of you, I will miss her.

I remember Nana and Poppy bringing me and Amy to visit. I was young and didn’t realize how special those times were. Rest in peace Aunt Agnes.
