John Burns Smiley, 74, of Fayetteville, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of unwavering faith, entered his heavenly home on November 23, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Born in Nashville, TN, on December 12, 1950, John’s commitment to the Lord and his community began early. He graduated from Central High School in 1969 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Professionally, John worked for Chrysler Corporation, and even after retirement, his heart for service led him to roles with the Fayetteville Police Department, the Lincoln County Civil Defense, and the Auxiliary Police.
John’s true calling was his faith. As a devoted Christian and lifelong member of the Liberty Church of Christ, he served the congregation as an Elder, Deacon, and Church Treasurer for many dedicated years. His love for the Lord and his family defined his life. He was a true family man who deeply enjoyed tracing his family’s genealogy. When he married his beloved Linda, he immediately welcomed her entire family with open arms, forming a bond that lasted a lifetime. In his spare time, John could be found working on his cherished antique vehicles.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Linda Dye Smiley; his daughter, Jennifer (Bill) Henry; his son, Sam (Melissa) Smiley; six cherished grandchildren: Kate America Henry, Grace Liberty Henry, Brittany Law, Harley Law, Savannah Morris, and Marissa Clark; his step-sister, Shirley Ann (Joe) Segraves; numerous great-grandchildren; and a large, extended family including sisters-in-law Rita (Jack) Clardy, Marie Dye, and Evelyn Smith, and brothers-in-law Don Williams and Noel Angers, along with many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Carter (Elizabeth Mae Gray) Smiley; and his mother, Josephine Burns Smiley.
The family sincerely appreciates the compassionate and tender care provided by the staff at Huntsville Hospital.
The family will receive friends for visitation at Higgins Funeral Home on Friday, November 28, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM and continuing until the service time. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home, with Bro. Tim Rice and Bro. Bill Cantrell officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Stewart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Church of Christ, 9 Cut Off Lane, Fayetteville, TN 37334.
Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of John Burns Smiley.
