Wanda Mitchell King

Wanda Mitchell King, age 70, of the Hardison Mill / Pottsville Community in Maury County died Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Vanderbilt University Critical Care Unit in Nashville, following a sudden illness.

Wanda was born in Trenton, Tennessee in Gibson County on July 29, 1946 to the late J.R. and Lorraine Mitchell. Her family later moved to Fayetteville where she attended Eighth District Elementary and graduated from Central High School in 1964. In different years she was a cheerleader, class officer, and class beauty.

During her senior year she met John “Johnny” King, son of the late J.C. and Wilma King. He was serving in the USAF and was home on leave when he saw Wanda’s senior picture displayed on the wall of The King’s Studio, his father’s business.

He immediately knew she was meant for him. John and Wanda were married on September 20, 1964 and would soon have celebrated their 53rd anniversary. Over the years she was active in John’s businesses and worked beside him until they retired in 2014. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Wanda enjoyed living in the country and cherished simple pleasures… her many pets, the wildlife that she could see from her windows, reading her Bible, corresponding with friends, and talking on the phone with their son, Chris. She was an excellent artist and craftsman. As a staunch conservative, she spent time daily on the internet following political news and posting her opinions on various websites.

Survivors include her husband John King and their son Dr. Chris King; brother-in-law Benny (Regina) King of Fayetteville; sister-in-law Angela (Bobby) Sims of Eads, TN and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and in-laws, Mrs. King was preceded in death by a son Michael Judson King.

Visitation with the family will be 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Higgins Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Dr. Thomas Dumser officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Mrs. Wanda Mitchell King.

We extend sincere condolences to the King Family. It was with great warmth that Dr. Christopher King sometimes spoke of his parents within the context of his sermons. Dr. King prepared us for marriage and performed the ceremony six years ago today.
