Virginia Mae Simms

Graveside funeral services for Virginia Mae Simms, age 94, of Fayetteville, will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29 at Riverview Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Simms was a native of Madison County, Alabama and born to the late Roy and Bessie Taylor on April 20, 1923. She loved to grow roses and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed for many years at the Old Largen Hotel and managed the restaurant. She went on to retire from Amana. Mrs. Simms enjoyed living at Southern Manor for ten years and recently at Bailey Manor. Mrs. Simms passed away on July 21, 2017 at Bailey Manor.

Survivors include her two daughters, Shirley Norman of Auburn, AL, and Sheila (Wayne) Simms of Fayetteville; son, Larry Simms, Missouri; sister, Avis Mitchell; brothers, Thomas Taylor and James (Faye) Taylor; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, some of whom she was able to spend an enjoyable season of life, babysitting and nurturing when they were young; two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simms was preceded in death by her husband Eldon Clifton Simms and fourteen siblings.

There will be no visitation prior to services. Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Mrs. Virginia Mae Simms.

Dwight & Jan, David & Nancy – what a legacy this precious lady leaves! Her accomplishments & her love for family and so many friends did not go unnoticed as evidenced by the tributes recorded. You have your precious memories & the assurance that she goes to meet her Father in Heaven for her just reward, everlasting life. Praise God for this outstanding life and all she did! I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Your mom was very special to me because of the loving care she gave my grandmother and the friendship that she shared with my mom. I pray that God will bless you with strength in the days ahead and that you will find peace and comfort in sweet memories.

I was very honored to be able to assist Ms. Simms when she lived at Southern Manor. Her smile made you smile to. She was very funny most of the time and she would make us all laugh. I remeber Ginny’s visits and how sweet and kind she was. She was such a beautiful lady. I can see her in the front porch swing on Williwoood dr. You were blessed to have her as a mom.
