Thomas Andrew Young, Ed.D., of Fayetteville, passed away, June 8, at 75-years-old. Mr. Young was born in Murfreesboro, and was the son of the late Thomas Esten and Christine Harrell Young. He served in the United States Army, and was an educator and coach in numerous communities. His most notably long service was with the Fayetteville and Lincoln County School Systems, where he taught and supervised for 35 years. Mr. Young holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of North Alabama (formerly Florence State); a Masters degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville; and a Doctorate in education from the University of Alabama. A loving husband and member of the Washington Street Church of Christ, Mr. Young was a TSSAA official, Boy Scouts of America Trooper Leader, and a volunteer for the Lincoln County Archives. He also served as City Alderman for the Fayetteville Board of Mayor and Alderman. Mr. Young had the distinct privilege of serving as the final manager of the Lee Dell pool, the last principal of Robert E. Lee School, and the first principal of Ralph Askins Elementary School. He was also a Tennessee state evaluator. He was an avid golfer, winning the former Fayetteville Golf and Country Club’s annual calcutta on two occasions. Mr. Young’s interests included brick masonry, carpentry, and Civil War history. He was passionate about genealogy and his grandchildren, and enjoyed some international travels to Japan and Great Britain. Mr. Thomas Young is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy “Dot” Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Smith Young, and his two children who are, son, Thomas Andrew “Drew” Young (Tori), of Fayetteville, and daughter, Christan Young Jones (James), of Arrington. He is survived by his grandchildren, Andy, Emma and Aidan Young, along with Miles and Henry Jones. His brothers, Joseph (Wanda) and Jim Young survive him as well. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, June 10, from 5-8 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home and funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 11, at 10 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers, to the Tom Young Education Memorial Scholarship Fund at First National Bank, or directly to the Fayetteville Lincoln County Public Library. Higgins Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Young certainly made a difference in three of our children’s lives… Jana, Jay and Jeremy thought the world of him and there wasn’t a day that didn’t go by when they were students at Fayetteville Jr. High that he didn’t make a point to say hello and ask how they were doing…He always told us just how he enjoyed having our kids in his school…doubt if he really knew just how much that meant as a parent to hear those words… he really cared about his “kids” and would have walked hot coals to have helped them if he could… it wasn’t just our kids either, it was all of his “kids” at school… if you were lucky to have gotten the time to visit the school and see him in action you could surely tell that he loved each and every one of them and treated them all as if they were the only one that mattered at the time… they all felt his love of teaching/being a principal and knew he genuinely cared about them. he was a very special man with a heart of gold, he had a sunny side, funny, witty and will be truly missed in this town. It is times like these that I just hope that I thanked him enough for being a part of my children’s lives and I hope he knew just how much he meant to them… My heart is heavy and prayers are going up for his family….

As I have read the memorials on this page, most have referred to him as Tom, Mr. Young. I, however, knew him as Coach. He was my basketball coach at Highland Rim and I always loved him. I have very fond memories of those days long ago; and how I respected his gift in coaching. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Words cannot begin to express how much I love and respected that man.
He has been a long time family friend.
He was always glad to see me whenever and wherever we would run into each other.
Fayetteville has lost a true icon!
He will truly be missed.

Mrs. Young, I send my sincere condolences to you and your family. My memories of “Coach Young” date back to 1967 at Highland Rim as a student athlete. I remember coming to your home during that time to celebrate Drew’s birthday. Always had the upmost respect for Coach Young.

Faye and I send our deepest feelings to you and your family. Tom was a good guy and I remember our time together on the football and basketball teams. The Scots have a saying “They are picking from our pen.” Tom was picked too soon. He will be missed but leaves a hell of a legacy due to his education of young people.

I was really sorry to learn of Tom’s passing although i knew he had been very sick for a while. i know he leaves a legacy of loving family and friends and being a positive role model for many kids. Sorry i can’t be there for visitation tonight but am thinking of each of you. i know the upcoming days of adjustment to Tom’s absence will be difficult but be comforted to some degree by the life he led and the memories he leaves. Best wishes to each of you.

Tom was one of the best fellows I ever met. In every conversation, it was clear to me that Tom was very careful in his choice of words. He was not just a good guy. He was one of the best.

From the first time you took me fishing to the last time I thought of you, I have never stopped loving you and never will. Every time I get sad I remember you are up there chilling with Jesus.
