Sawyer Gene Smith

Sawyer Gene Smith, beloved son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, and nephew, passed away on May 18, 2025. Born on July 30, 2023, in Columbia, TN, he was the treasured child of Baleigh Whitson Smith and the late Lane Garrett Smith.

From the moment he entered the world, Sawyer brought pure joy to everyone around him. He was full of life—wide open from daylight to dark—and his bright smile and sweet, innocent laugh had a way of lighting up every room. He was the happiest little boy, always ready for fun, and so deeply loved by everyone who knew him.

Sawyer loved riding the ranger to visit his “moo moos” and chickens, playing and dancing with his big sister, and spending every moment he could outdoors. Cuddles with Mama were a daily must, and from the time he came home from the hospital, he never slept anywhere but by his mama and dada’s side. He had a special bond with his friends and teachers at Little Blessings Childcare, who he adored with all his heart.

Though his time here was brief, Sawyer’s presence left a lasting imprint. He will forever be remembered for his joyful spirit, boundless energy, and the love he gave so freely. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, especially his mama and sissy, who will hold him close always.

Sawyer is survived by his loving mother, Baleigh Smith; his big sister, Brynlee Pruitt; paternal grandparents, Kris Smith (Kandi Thomas) and Kelly Johnson Smith; maternal grandparents, Barry and Bethany Whitson; aunts, Bridget Whitson (Jeb Walker) and Daisy Smith (Weston Short); and many extended family members who loved him dearly.

A service to celebrate Sawyer’s life will be held at 12 PM on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home, with Chris Jones and Charles Gatlin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hills Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to visitation on Thursday, May 22, from 4 PM to 8 PM, and again on Friday from 10 AM until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to benefit the Lane Smith Family at any branch of the Bank of Lincoln County, or to Ronald McDonald House Charities, 26345 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673-1263.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to care for the family of Sawyer Gene Smith.

Baleigh always remember the cherished moments with Sawyer. I keep remembering him blinking his eyes at me when we were eating supper in Fayetteville. I think he was winking but he was the cutest little fellow. Hugs to you my friend and all the family. May God comfort you in this most difficult time.

He was welcomed to heaven with a huge bear hug by Jesus while the angels sang his favorite lullaby. His daddy is holding him and rocking him listening to his laugh. All the love and memories you shared will remain. Prayers and hugs
