Marilyn Ruth Floyd

Marilyn Floyd went to be with our Lord and Savior for eternity after a long illness on Wednesday morning, January 17, 2018 as witnessed by loved ones and caretakers at Life Care Center in Tullahoma.

Marilyn was born to Dr. Clarence Floyd and Edith Smith Floyd 85 years ago in Rome, Georgia (Floyd County). They moved to Fayetteville when Marilyn was 9 years old along with her brother, Wayne. She graduated from Central High School and Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN in 1954. As she was a very modest and quiet lady, she never announced that she was the recipient of the “Who’s Who Among the Students” in American Universities and Colleges in 1953. She was very active in her sorority, Gamma Chi, for many years and though never a bride, served as bridesmaid for many of her friends. She remained close friends with most of her classmates and was always interested in keeping newspaper clippings and pictures (well organized of course). Marilyn remained in Nashville for 32 more years and taught first and second grade at Eakin Elementary School. She enjoyed travel with friends and family and being an avid fan and supporter of Vanderbilt Basketball and Football (season tickers for basketball for years).

Upon retirement in 1986, she returned to her home in Fayetteville where she was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville. Her family has a long history in that congregation and Marilyn continued her love for traveling, singing, teaching, organizing and worshiping with “Yesterdays Youth”.

Marilyn is survived a lifelong family friend, Calotta Loyd Edsell (Allan) of Germantown, TN and many friends and cousins mostly from Georgia as well as the loving expert caregivers at Life Care Center of Tullahoma. Since May, 2017 those precious angels having showered Marilyn with blessings that surpass ordinary health care.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 12:00 PM until time of service at 2:00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home. Celebration of Life for Marilyn Ruth Floyd will be conducted Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 2 :00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Heaven welcomes a special lady to the place that is prepared for her in Paradise. Marilyn is dearly loved by so many, especially the Hamner family. Grace Hamner is fluffing seat cushions because they have a lot of catching up to do. May Eternal Life be as promised and may your rest be in peace.

Marilyn was a sweet kind lady. I have known her since high school. I did not see her much until we started working elections together. We caught up on a lot of old friends and I always looked forward to working with her. I went to her farther when I was young for a few aches and pains. I think Marilyn was in the class of 1950.

She was a delightful person. Enjoyed knowing her and see her at the Mexican Las Trojas.

I have known and loved Marilyn since we were in 3rd
grade together, went through high school (1950) and
have kept in touch through the years. I could not say
enough kind things about this gentle, sweet lady. I only wish the world was full of Marilyns. Rest in peace my friend.

I write this with Sadness for the death of Marilyn. I knew her Brother well. Marilyn and I were of the same age. I know she will be missed.

Faithful friend. Precious to all who knew her. Thoughtful and caring enough to call you out when she saw you lacking. Rest In Peace, dear friend. We will miss you.

We were both in high school with Marilyn. She was such a very sweet and caring lady. Remember her parents and brother, Wayne. She will be missed by so many friends and especially her Baptist Church family.

I did not know Marilyn very well, but I did meet her a few times over the years. She seemed to be a sweet woman, but based on my experiences with other retired teachers of her era, I am guessing that she ran a tight ship in her classroom. I also believe by my brief encounters.

I met her on a trip I took with my sister with First Baptist Church. I really liked her. She was so sweet. God bless her loved ones.
