Margaret Harris Shutt, age 104, passed from this life on January 8, 2021. She was born on the family farm in Howell, TN to the late Wallace and Eunice Thomas Harris.
Mrs. Shutt’s education included Tarbox School, Hume-Fogg High School in Nashville, TN, and graduation from Central High in Fayetteville. She attended Tennessee College for Women in Murfreesboro and graduated from Peabody College in Nashville with a degree in Industrial Arts. After WWII, she married John Lloyd Shutt of Nashville. They had a loving and joyful marriage for over 60 years.
Mrs. Shutt was an avid genealogist. In Fayetteville, she is descended from the families of Norris, Slater, McKinney, and Wallace. In Howell, her lines are Harris, Thomas, Clark, Crawford, and Buchanan. Since 1816 she is the fifth generation of eight of her Harris family to live on the farm in Howell.
She is preceded in death by her husband John Shutt and brother Thomas Middleton Harris. She is survived by one son, Jack Shutt and wife Gail, granddaughter Rachel Harwell, and great-grandchildren Will Thomas and Maci Alease Harwell.
In lieu of flowers, she would like donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church Child Care Center, the Fayetteville Library’ s genealogical area, or the Genealogical Society.
A private burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery.

I always enjoyed working with Margaret doing genealogy and history of Lincoln County. John and Margaret were a wonderful couple.

My sympathies and love go out to you, Jack and Gail, and your sweet family. A wonderful woman and friend was Margaret! A fond memory from my stint at Southern Manor was Margaret placing two alarm clocks in her lap when napping so as not to miss the “programs” and activities I was privileged to provide for the residents. So amazing and bright was she as she excelled in trivia and history. Most definitely an “A” student!! I will miss her dearly!

My love goes out to Jack, my high school bosom buddy. I probably spent more waking time at the Shutt’s house than at my own during those years (no exaggeration!), playing ping pong with Mr. Shutt — I don’t think I ever beat him! — and eating snacks that Mrs. Shutt always had for Jack and me. It was like I grew up with two sets of parents. Jack and I pretty much stayed out of mischief, and we even put together a film on The Battle of Ft. Sumter that sparked the Civil War. (I had never met anyone from Tennessee before.) That film won the “Best In Show” award at our high school history fair. As you can see, I have wonderful memories of the Shutts and feel blessed to have had both Mr. and Mrs. Shutt in my life. I’m sure that they will rest in peace knowing that they had such wonderful influences on so many lives.

Jack and Gail, while this is a sad time I know you are celebrating the remarkably long and rich life your mom led. Although I’ve known your parents “from a distance” all my life, it was a true honor for me to get to know them in the latter years of my practice.
Let’s keep her love for genealogy and family connection alive…

I am sad to hear of your Mother’s passing. Your parents were so influential to me in scouting when I was a child, and they were such a joy to be around. They both brightened my life for many years, and they will always be an example to strive to emulate. Their lives reflected both achievement and joy, flavored with humility and a servant spirit. Mrs. Shutt was a JOY to know! An added bonus was getting to know Jack and Gail through out their many visits at Lincoln Manor aka Southern Manor.
I will always remember Mrs. Shutt……. I am comforted to know that she is with John-she missed him so much……..
