Johnnie Mae Carter

Johnnie Mae Waggoner Carter was born December 11, 1931 and departed this life September 7, 2014 at her residence. She was a native of Kelso, TN and the daughter of the late Morris and Cordelia Smith  Waggoner. She was a graduate of West End High School and attended Tennessee State College, later she graduated from Cayleck Beauty School and Riches Culinary School in Buffalo, NY.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mayberry St Church of Christ with Bro. Cedric Davis and Bro. Arthur Hewlett officiating. Burial will follow in Carter Cemetery beside her husband Felix B. Carter. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Mayberry St. Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons Felix L. (Cliftena) Carter and Brian K. Carter both of Fayetteville, grandchildren Bryon R. (Crystal) Carter of Shelbyville and Stacey C. Carter of Los Angeles, CA, great-grandchildren Bryce R. Carter and Cayus R. Carter, sister-in-law Ruby Smith of Fayetteville, niece Barbara Gwin, nephews Larry Smith, Willie Smith and Jay Dunn, great niece Sonja Gwin, special friends Mary Ella Buchanan, Ann Gordon, Rebecca Hampton, Leonard Coleman, Waymon Buchanan, June McDonald, Helena Bryson, Juanita Funk and a host of other family and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mayberry St. Church of Christ or the American Cancer Society.

She was a graduate of West End High School and attended Tennessee A & I College after she graduated from Cayleck Beauty School and Riches Culinary School in Buffalo, NY. Johnnie was baptized into Christ seventy three years ago. She feared God and kept his Commandments. She felt if you stay with the Lord “You never walked alone”. Johnnie was the bookkeeper for the Mayberry St. Church of Christ for approximately fifty years. She enjoyed Bible classes and visiting other congregations. She was employed at Scovill Mfg. Co. for a number of years and retired from Eagle Snacks. She enjoyed numerous activities including cooking and was known for her special Sunshine and Pound Cake. She looked forward to preparing family dinners. She loved the outdoors especially working in her flower garden and fishing. Stacey took her on her last fishing trip in April 2013. She enjoyed that trip and caught several fish. She would beam when she talked about her two sons, two grandson and two great-grandsons. She would say we do not have little girls in our home for buttons and bows. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter-in-law Cleo, getting lost would not phase her. She would say “if you can read you can find your way.”
