John Lawson Sherrell, Jr. age 92, died at Kirby Pines Nursing Home in Memphis, TN, on March 8, 2012. He is survived by his son, Daniel Lawson Sherrell and wife Linda of Memphis, TN and his daughter Donna Sherrell Martin and husband Barry of Cincinnati, OH, three grandchildren Robert Lawson Sherrell and wife Kristi, David Jeffrey Sherrell and wife Sonya and Stephanie Martin Pratt and husband Charles, three great-grandchildren Hailey, Jacqueline and Matthew Sherrell.
Mr. Sherrell was born in Delrose, TN on August 24, 1919, graduated from high school in Fayetteville and then went on to the University of Tennessee to study agriculture. His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Army Signal Corp as a radio repairman. After his discharge, he earned his electrical engineering degree at Vanderbilt University. It was there in Nashville he met Ellen Taylor and they were married for 54 years prior to her death in 2001.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherrell were charter members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Sherrell was an avid horse enthusiast and gardener after he retired from his job at Redstone Arsenal in 1977. He was known for his love of family, good food and a wonderful sense of humor.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11am at Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL with Rev. Charles Gattis officiating. Burial will follow at 1 PM at Riverview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville. Visitation will be Friday morning from 10AM – 11AM at the Trinity United Methodist Church.
