Floy Miles Barnes

Funeral services for Mrs. Floy Miles Barnes, age 94 of Fayetteville, will be conducted Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 10:00 am at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Black officiating. Burial will follow in Giles Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Barnes, known to her great grandchildren as Gran Gran, was born April 17, 1919 and departed this life January 26, 2014. Floy was a native of Giles County, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Bodenham High School where she played guard on the Middle Tennessee State Championship team. Her post high school education included degrees from Martin Methodist College and Athens State College.

Her passion and career was teaching. She taught for 25 years in the Giles County Schools. Sh and her late husband George W. Barnes moved to Lincoln County upon retirement to be closer to their family. Her life in Lincoln County was full. She was an active member of the Alpha Kappa Club and she volunteered at the hospital. In her spare time she enjoyed antiquing and she and Mr. Barnes had booths at several antique malls.

Mrs. Barnes was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. She was active in her church as a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class and as a leader in the Senior Neighbors group.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elijah P. Miles and Beulah Wilkerson Miles and by her husband of 55 years, George W. Barnes.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by a loving and devoted daughter Donna Gayle Barnes Cox and husband Jimmy Cox, two grandsons James Barnes Cox (J.B.) and wife Nancy M. Cox and William Lyman Cox (Lyman) and wife Kim Cox. She is also survived by four great grandchildren Ben Cox, Julia Cox (J.B. and Nancy), Savannah Cox and Jordan Cox (Lyman and Kim) all of Lincoln County. In addition to family, Mrs. Barnes was attended by a very special caregiver, Debbie Keith who she was very fond of.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Senior neighbors and the Alpha Kappa Club.

Visitation with the family will be Wednesday night, January 29, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

Mr. and Mrs. Cox and family; So sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Barnes. She was a sweet lady and I know she will be missed but is in a better place.

Donna, Jimmy, J. B. & Lyman and family, So sorry to learn of your mother and grandmother’s passing. Giving our mother and grandmother up is very hard but just lean on the Lord and He will make it easier. Pull out all the happy memories and you will find yourself smiling and warmed by the love you shared. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. I am so sad to hear of Mrs. Barnes’ passing. She was such a very sweet lady and I know you are all going to miss her so much. Wish I could be there to hug your necks in person but I can’t and I just want you to know I am thinking of your family! Love always!
