Earle Hopkins Jones III

Earle Hopkins Jones III passed away on June 17, 2021 at the age of 71. Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Northern Virginia, Earle was the son and grandson of Fayettevillians with whom he shared a name. His grandfather Earle Sr. was the manager of the Fayetteville Milling Company from 1910 until his death in 1958. His father Earle Jr. grew up in Fayetteville, graduated from Tulane University in 1939, married Lynchburg beauty Hattie Sue Waggoner in 1940, and moved to Washington, DC, to work for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Fifty years later they moved back to Fayetteville to live out their remaining years. Earle III made the move to Fayetteville in 2006, and his sister Susan’s family had moved to Huntsville in 1984, so they were finally all established as true Southerners.

Like his father, Earle was the handiest of fellows with tools and wood. While still in the DC area, he refurbished and modernized several houses, then built two luxury homes in the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia. He brought the same floor plans to Tennessee and built two more luxury homes on Tims Ford Lake before moving to Fayetteville.

Earle is survived by his sister Susan Jones Smith of Huntsville, his nephew Alan Wayne Smith of St. Augustine, FL, a host of loving cousins (especially Mack Hamilton) and loyal friend Chano Sanchez, both of whom provided care for Earle in his recent years of physical disability.

Several of Earle’s extended family members will gather on the afternoon of
Sunday, June 27, 2021. Burial will be in the family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Fayetteville, TN.

If lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Junior’s House, 704 Maple Street, Fayetteville, TN 37334, to help protect children in danger of abuse.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Earle Hopkins Jones III.

I knew Earle for a brief four years and he was a good man. He cared a great deal about people. I saw him back in March and he seemed in great spirits. I didn’t know of his passing until just now. He called me often and we spoke on the phone and when his calls stopped I was concerned…..I will miss his wonderful personality
