Dr. James Michael Slater

It is with regret we announce the passing of Dr. James Michael Slater, age 72, of Fayetteville, TN. Jim was born on January 18, 1947 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Fred Lyman and Vera Viola VanHouten Slater. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO, worked as a Trauma Surgeon for many years in Mid-Michigan, and was a college professor with Ivy Tech Community College. Dr. Slater passed away on June 8, 2019 at Lincoln Medical Center.

Jim enjoyed fly fishing, astronomy, and spending time with his family. He was larger than life. Survivors include his devoted wife, Dr. Misty Dawn Miller Slater; daughters, Jessica Sue (Rick) Carter of Ann Arbor, MI, Emily Michael Slater of Las Vegas, NV, Breanna Elizabeth Jacobs of Columbus, OH, and Kate Isabella Slater, Natalie Erin Slater, and Daisy Amelia Slater all of Fayetteville, TN; son, Ian Stephen Slater, wife Nicole of Phillipsburg, NJ; granddaughters, Jane Victoria Carter, and Rachel Emily Carter, Abigail Zoe Slater and Caroline Janice Slater; and a brother, Stephen (Anne Jackson) Slater of Ankeny, IA.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fayetteville, TN with Reverend Father George Panthananickal officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at 4 PM until 7 PM on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Higgins Funeral Home in Fayetteville, TN.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Union Township Cemetery (Hope Lutheran Cemetery) at 2001 South 500 East, Columbia City, IN 46725.

Mrs. Slater, Shocked and truly sorry about Mr. Slater. So wish he was still with you. I am the person who stopped and visited with you two and talked to you about Gen. Forrest camping in your area and you told me about talking to with Shelby Foot when you were a teen. Missed you last night at Higgins.
