Dean Smith Askins

Funeral service for Mrs. Dean Smith Askins, age 91, of Fayetteville, will be conducted Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, beside her late husband, William Roy Askins, Sr. Mrs. Askins passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at her residence.

Mrs. Askins was a native of Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Earl and Caroline Long Smith. She helped run the Market Street Grocery, was an avid golfer and a member of the Fayetteville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son Bill (Kay) Askins of Fayetteville, grandchildren Shawn Askins of Madison, AL, Dawn (Russ) Dixon of Fayetteville, Luke (August) Askins of Corryton, TN, Amanda (Jeff) Franks, Andrea (John) Thorpe, brothers Glen (Billie) Smith, Wayne (Kathy) Smith all of Fayetteville, 9 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Mrs. Askins was preceded in death by her husband William Roy Askins, Sr. and son Richard Dean Askins.

Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, February 2, 2016 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908

It is with regret that I learn of the passing of Mrs. Askins. I will always remember her as a kind lady preparing snacks for a grubby bunch of little kids playing in her yard….
