Danny C. Owens

Danny Cecil Owens, age 72, passed from this life into eternal glory on Sunday October 19, 2014 at the Huntsville Hospital following a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born in Lincoln County on February 6, 1942 to William Cody and Evelyn Benson Owens. Mr. Owens attended Elora Elementary School and graduated from Flintville High School in 1960. For 12 years he and his three siblings never missed a day of school. Mr. Owens was a proud member of the National Guard and he retired from Bell South after 40 years of service in 2002.  He was a Christian and long time member of the Smithland Community Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. In recent years, he attended Gum Springs Baptist Church.  He loved his Lord, family, community, state and country and evidenced this by being actively involved in several organizations. His greatest passion was to defend the lives of unborn babies. He helped organize the annual Life Chain in Lincoln County held every October which supports the Pro-Life cause. Additionally, he was active in Lincoln County CAN and worked faithfully to establish a monthly prayer meeting on the Public Squares of Lincoln County, Giles County and Moore County. Since his retirement, he was blessed with many years to enjoy the sports and activities of his beloved grandchildren and great-grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Owens; sisters, Linda O. Woods (Orville), Elaine O. Barnes (Paul);  sons, Eric V. Owens (Jennifer), Daniel Owens (Crystal);  daughters,  Stacey Owens (Jeremy),  Amanda Curtis (Brian); and 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother David Dwight Owens.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Winfred Stayton officiating. Burial will follow in Kelso Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday evening 5-8 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

I want you all to know I share in your grief. I did not know Danny was ill. I cannot attend visitation as I am sick with an upper respiratory infection and laryngitis, but I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Amanda and family, I am so sorry for your loss. It’s been a long road for Danny with a lot of ups and some downs. But he was such a fighter. I met him the one time Amanda when he was with you and the kids at Cracker Barrel – he was such a nice, pleasant man. I am so glad I had that one chance meeting.

I will pray for comfort for all of you and if there is anything that any of you need, please don’t hesitate to call on me…

I am proud to be able to call Danny friend and am so grateful for his faithful concerns for his faith, his family, his country and the unborn. He was the epitome of a Christian warrior defending the faith and of a citizen defending the constitution of the united states of America. He was also the classic example of a country gentleman. He will be missed by many. I am very sorry for your loss and grateful for all the good memories all of you will cherish.

Prayers are with the family during this time of sorrow. I had not seen Danny in some time but some of my favorite memories of him was when I was a child growing up and the family gatherings we had at my grandmothers. Stacey was always right there by her dad being as quiet as he. He always seemed to be a quiet man then but I always thought he was special. Mr. Danny you will be missed here on earth but I know you has taken your place in heaven with all the other angels. RIP.

I am so sorry about Danny. He was one that tried hard to live to serve the Lord. Our last conversation was about how he wanted to keep working to right the wrongs and have a good report at judgement. His zeal against the murder of unborn babies was a testimony of his love of life and the God he served. Glad we shared so many of the things we wanted to make right that is wrong in our country. Rest in peace Danny. Glad I knew you.

I have been friends with many of Danny’s family members since childhood and his mother was one of my favorite people when I was in grade school. I didn’t know Mr. Owens personally but I know he will be missed terribly by his children as well as other family members. May the memory of him and his patriotism make the days ahead a little brighter for you all.
