C. Doyne Toone, M.D.

C. Doyne Toone passed away on February 4, 2009, at age 82, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Doyne Toone was born on March 12, 1926 in Rector, Arkansas to Clarence and Vera Toone. After graduating high school at only 16, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1944. Doyne then earned his commission as an Ensign and earned his pilot wings through Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. His final duty station was in Seattle, Washington where he later attended college and medical school at the University of Washington. In 1957, he graduated at the top of his medical school class and moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he completed his medical residency at Vanderbilt University. During his residency, he met Dr. T. A. Patrick, Jr. who influenced his decision to move to Fayetteville, Tennessee and join Patrick Clinic, now known as Fayetteville Medical Associates.
Dr. Toone practiced medicine in Fayetteville, Tennessee for 20 years. During his practice in Fayetteville, the barter system was still good for paying for medical treatment. Patients paid with milk, eggs, bread, produce, or with cash as they could.  He would also make house calls if needed. He even designed his home with an office and outside entrance for patients needing treatment.
In 1978, Dr. Toone moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and joined a medical practice in Surfside Beach. He retired in 1987 and devoted more time to his love of reading, golf, and political science. Although later he wanted to return to practice medicine, an arthritic back prevented it.
Dr. Toone was preceded in death by his eldest daughter Marguerite “Bunny” Toone. He is survived by his wife Linda Collins Toone of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two sisters, Jean Jarrett of Woodstock, Georgia, and Jo Boyd and brother-in-law Pete Boyd of Rector, Arkansas; son Charles D. Toone of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter Barbara and son-in-law Jim Biehler of Nashville Tennessee; daughter Lori and son-in-law Stan Golden of Fayetteville, Tennessee; son Christopher Toone of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and son Cregg and daughter-in-law Monica Toone of Little River, South Carolina. Doyne also had five wonderful grandchildren that he loved very much and would brag about to anyone who would listen: Ryan Golden, Claire and Chad Toone, and Natalie and Christopher Toone.
A service was held at McMillan-Small Funeral home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Friday February 6, 2009 at 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association by phone (1-800-272-3900), online (http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp), or by mail to:
